Namely

2018 - 2019

Summary

Namely is an all-in-one HR platform designed for small to mid-sized companies. While at Namely, I was a player-coach design lead. My worked spanned across payroll, workforce management and taxation.

Employee Paystubs

A huge pain point for our users was not being able to access paystubs from their mobile device. Paystubs are used as proof of employment, so they are needed for rental agreements, mortgages, car purchases, etc. Makes sense. So we took 5 months to research, design, and engineer this feature. It became our most popular feature release of the year.

Role Based Workflows

All good tools have workflows in place for changes made in the system. A research survey revealed that workflows often get lost when employees on are vacation or leave the company. Imagine getting a promotion – a manager probably kicks this off, their manager approves it, then it goes into effect.

But what happens when someone in that workflow is out, on leave, or left the company? Enter the need for Role Based Workflows. This feature allows an admin to configure logical paths that point to roles, not individual people.

Multi Jurisdictional Taxation

As our customer base expanded, so did the need for more sophisticated Payroll functionality. This feature introduced the ability for companies to tax individuals in more than one location. This was essential for any larger company to stay compliant with tax law. This feature addition allowed us to close deals with companies that we could not previously support, creating a notable uptick in sales.

What I wanted to show you

HR tools are extremely complex, that’s why it’s important that tools like Namely exist – to help small businesses navigate these challenges with confidence.

What I learned

Don’t over simplify – sometimes that makes the product harder to use and leaves your customers with more problems than solutions.
